Gnome News
Blog #139
For a number of years I have subscribed to an international newsletter about Gnomes. The latest edition arrived last week and I decided to share it with you. A couple of stories I enjoyed:
Last year there was a report from Australia that a major highway outside of Perth had two or three plastic gnomes sitting along the highway at a small intersection. Daily more gnomes started to arrive, until over 100 little gnome figures appeared. No one knows where they are coming from.
Another story was an English man remembering the surprise his mother gave to him when he was a little boy to take him on a surprise train ride to a special public garden with many gnome statues. His comment was, “My Mum was so kind to plan that surprise trip for my special day.”
Gnome News was founded by an English woman. In 1997 my friend Liz Spera visited Ann Atkin’s GNOME RESERVE in Devon, England. 19 years earlier Ann created a Gnome Club sending a monthly GNOME NEWS to the members to publicize her garden and share Gnome stories among the members. Ann asked Liz to take over the Club and publishing of the newsletter. This brought it to California. Liz had a Gnome Museum in her barn once filled with around 2000 gnomes.

Gnomes and Musicians: A Fascinating Connection
by Jan McCarthy
As you know, we English are divided about gnomes. We either love them or hate them. Not many people know that George Harrison of The Beatles adored them, and brought dozens to live with him, and especially at his Friar Park mansion. Here is a photo I found, which is still available as a poster, many years after he passed in LA. Pink Floyd recorded a single The Gnome, and David Bowie recorded The Laughing Gnome, so I guess there is some strange connection between gnomes and musicians!

While researching for “Gnome News,” I (Liz) came across these interesting sites and wanted to share the information with my fellow gnome enthusiasts.
